Every Makeup Guide on This Site: All 44, Sorted by What You Want to Fix

This is the index that was missing. Nikol's written guides — the long ones, with the tables and the step-by-step order — have never had a page that simply lists them. They have sat behind links inside other articles: fine if you already know what you are looking for, useless if you don't.

So here they all are, sorted by problem rather than product category — because that is not how the problem arrives. Nobody wakes up wanting "eye products." She wakes up because her eyeshadow vanished when she opened her eyes, or her lipstick crept into the lines around her mouth again.

Fifteen are the complete guides, marked below, each covering a whole subject start to finish. The rest are shorter, answering one question. New here? Start with a complete guide and follow it outward. And none of this is the video feed — Nikol's YouTube videos live on their own page, newest first.

Start here

Not sure what is going wrong? Start with the whole face.

Complexion and skin

Everything that goes on before colour, and why it misbehaves.

Eyes

The biggest section, because most eye makeup advice assumes a lid with no fold in it.

Lips

Thin lips and feathering are two different problems with two different fixes.

Brows and cheeks

The two features that hold a face up, and the two most often placed where they used to go.

Tools

Technique is half brush. For anyone who owns a set and only uses three of them.

Going gray and silver hair

Three complete guides, because going grey is three separate projects: getting through the grow-out, keeping the silver clean and shiny, and rebuilding the makeup that suited your old colour.

Occasions and gifts

A face that has to survive a whole evening, or a present for someone whose taste you are guessing at.

Nikol's story

Who is behind the formulas, plus the essays from Beauty Reinvented, the book about going grey and rebuilding your own beauty standard. Not how-to guides — the reason the how-to guides read as they do.

  • About Nikol JohnsonThe complete guide. Licensed esthetician, permanent makeup artist and HSN beauty expert, grey since 39, doing mature women's makeup since 1996 and formulating for skin that no longer holds powder.
  • Welcome To Beauty Reinvented With Gray Hair — The whole arc, unsweetened: infertility through to grey hair, and why nothing here is sugar-coated.
  • Woman Interrupted — Ten years in business, and the unapologetic decision to go grey at forty and reinvent her beauty in public.
  • Welcome to Nikol Beauty — What changed when the brand became Nikol Beauty, and the thinking behind the reformulated line.
  • Bold, Fierce, Unapologetic — The case for ageing boldly, and why the products celebrate it rather than disguise it.
  • Is One Voice Enough? — On IVF, a late endometriosis diagnosis, and the silent bond she shares with Gabrielle Union. The most personal thing on the site.
  • Fashion Dysmorphia — How the industry's demand for youth erodes self-esteem, and the brands that quietly worked out their actual demographic instead.
  • Transparency In a Social Nation — What transparency is supposed to mean, and what it has come to mean in a world distorted by social media.
  • 'Worth $49 Unlimited.' — What happened when a company took one of her photographs to advertise itself, what it offered her, and what her work is actually worth.
  • Superhero's & Disrupting The Beauty Industry — On looking up to older women wearing their silver openly, and why brands still refuse to show them at all.
  • Beauty and The Power of Words — Why the lipsticks are called Ambitious, Show Up and Worth It — choosing a colour in the morning as a way of choosing an attitude.
  • Embracing Self-Love Through Beauty at Any Age — Skincare and makeup as a daily ritual rather than a repair job.

The videos

Everything above is written. The videos are separate, and sorted differently on purpose.

  • YouTube Videos — Nikol's latest YouTube videos, newest first. It stays in date order rather than by topic, because this is the feed women check weekly for whatever she has just filmed.

The bottom line

Fifteen complete guides, twenty-nine shorter answers, one video feed. If you have five minutes, pick the heading matching whatever annoyed you in the mirror this morning and read that section's complete guide — it will tell you which shorter page you need next.
