My Top Tips For Finding The Perfect Bathing Suit Over 40

articles/Add-a-heading.jpg

It’s that time of year again where you are rethinking your work out plan, clean eating schedule and finding that perfect bathing suit for summer. I know how hard and discouraging this can be. Remember there is no such thing as the “perfect body” work towards having a healthy attitude and mindset about your beautiful body. Enough of the negative self-talk and beating yourself up because you don’t look like everyone else on Instagram. You know how I feel about that. Celebrate YOU, your unique body and stop comparing yourself to photoshopped pictures.

Don’t panic because you have all of April and May to reinvent your body, maybe change up your workout plan, incorporate more balanced meals or just some down time to recharge yourself.

There are a couple of questions you need to first ask yourself before you start looking for a bathing suit.

What’s your overall style when it comes to bathing suits?

Do you have more of an apple or pear body type? Hourglass? Small chested? Large bust? Plus-size? What do you feel most comfortable wearing?

Are you a one-piece kind of girl or do you like to show off a little more skin with a two-piece?

Do you like to add a cover-up to your look?

What kind of activities will you be doing when you are in your suit? Are you going to be snorkeling or swimming? Just laying pool side?

Are you concerned with how much sun your skin will be exposed to the sun?

All of these questions are important to guide you to the best fit, look and feel for your upcoming summer season. I tend to gravitate towards full piece bathing suits now that I am over forty. I can wear bikini’s but I like the elongating look a full piece bathing suit gives my body. I feel that a two-piece chops up my frame and that’s not a look I am going for these days.

I love this rose-themed bathing suit from Kate Spade it not only has a bustier top that gives me more support and shape to my small bust line but the side ruching gives stretch and shape to my body. I paired this bathing suit (of course with my favorite Rose wine) with a thin flowy black cover-up and statement earrings in pink to pick up the rose detail. I feel more comfortable walking around a beach club or resort with a chic cover-up on.

Another great option is this ruffle two-piece bathing suit. I know tankinis get a bad rap but why? I think that you have to go with what you like and feel comfortable in. I am not a ruffle type of girl but I love the color blue on my pale skin with grey hair so I thought why not try this suit out. I didn’t even try the bathing suit on at the store I just threw caution to the wind and bought it. The tiered ruffles off set my smaller chest and the strapless design leans to a more sophisticated look. Tankinis might not be for everyone but you can’t throw out a style just because the latest magazine says to avoid it at all costs.

These are just two bathing suits I styled myself in for pre-summer and wanted to get you thinking about what kind of vibe you want to channel this summer. It’s very easy to age yourself with the wrong choice of swimwear. Skirted suits or “figure-enhancers” with visible control tops that just move all your flesh around and give you “muffin top” arms is not a classic look. Be honest with yourself about your size, frame, and look for bathing suits that make you feel confident.

Another great tip is to spend some time trying on bathing suits and taking pictures of yourself in the dressing room mirror. I have done this for years; in fact, I did this when I was trying on wedding dresses then found it to be so helpful that I do it with anything I am thinking about buying because it gives me a third person perspective. Some clothes that I think look amazing in the mirror don’t necessarily look amazing in my snapshot. It’s a great way to weed out what is not working for your body type.

Say “Hello Summer” to bright solid colors or sophisticated neutrals. If you love patterns look for color-blocking or ombre to give a more extended leaner look. Cover-ups are a great way to enhance your look whether you throw on a crisp cotton or linen tunic or shirt, flowy linen pants or a long dress.

Designers that I love that have sizing from petite to plus-size:

Plus-Size: Tommy Bahama, Becca Etc,

Great for over-all classic: Miraclesuit, Trina Turk, Kate Spade
